Samuel Seabury's ideas about Government

Seabury had traveled to Britain to become a bishop, so his ideas about the colonial government were highly influenced by the mother country.

He also did not approve of how the Continental Congress turned out to be against England. As a Tory, he only believed that the two houses of Parliament should be the only places that government could take place for the country.

In addition, Seabury believes that America has caused its own problems.

  • By causing mobs and violence, England had to use the Parliament to make laws and British troops more powerful in the colonies.
Yet... If the colonies would have made peace with England, Parliament may have been more willing to help the colonies reach a more benefiting solution.

The colonies had also started to shield itself from England.

  • Rhode Island had taken down a fort to rebuild it against England.
  • Maryland had already spent £10,000 to train and arm soldiers against the king.

Seabury thought that the colonial governments and committees that had sanctioned these actions were indeed part of the reason that Great Britain had to take more aggressive actions on the colonies. This would only give Parliament more evidence of the colonies being treasonous.

All in all, Seabury's ideas were about keeping the colonies and England together. Only when the colonies decided to approach England with peaceful terms and stop aggravating Parliament would the omnipotent England listen to the new world.
